Story Recording Booth

We want to hear your story! Sign up to sit in one of our story recording booths. Hosted at 4 branch libraries, you’ll have the chance to record your own story about caregiving and growing older in America. We’ll provide the prompts and the guidance – you provide the story. Recorded stories will be compiled into an oral history anthology featuring an original soundtrack. Registration required.

Cross-Generational Story Swap

Let's get our community talking! This unique event is designed to foster connection across generations. Older adults will sign up to share stories from their lives with teen volunteers. Topics will be drawn at random by each pairing and they'll have five minutes to discuss before switching conversation partners. Registration required. Self-portrait Workshops

Graphic Anthology

Stories recorded in our booths will be turned into original illustrations by artist Gavin Sellers-Norman. This graphic anthology will be published May 2024 and 100 printed copies will be available to the public free of charge. Copies will also be available for purchase online.

StorySlam

A live storytelling event will be hosted at Switchboard Gallery in Placerville. Storytellers will have 5 minutes each to tell a personal story based on the themes Roz Chast explores in Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant. Prepare your story ahead of time or improvise on site!

Artist Talk

Gavin Sellers-Norman and personal historian/musician Mariah Padilla will talk about their experiences working with the NEA Big Read and producing creative work based on Roz Chast’s memoir. Join in with your own questions and observations.

A Picture's Worth Gallery Exhibition

View an exhibition of illustrator Gavin Sellers-Norman's original work! The show will feature illustrations inspired by the community-sourced graphic anthology and will run May 2024 through the end of June.
