1,000 Books Before Kindergarten logo.

Attention parents & caregivers! The library invites you to participate in this self-paced, early literacy program that encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they enter kindergarten.

This might sound like a hard program to complete, but you actually have more time than you think. Reading one book a night to your child would get you to 365 books in one year, 730 books in two years, and over the goal with 1,095 books in just three years! Since most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, that means you actually have 1,825 days to reach your goal.

How it works:

  1. Download the Beanstack app, sign in, or create an account, and enroll in the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program.
  2. Log each book as you and your child read together. Repeat reads count too!
  3. Visit any branch in the El Dorado County Library system to redeem your reward for every 100 books read.

When you reach 1,000 books read, you'll receive a special Certificate of Achievement, a free book to take home, and the option to be placed on our Wall of Honor!

Why is this important?

Studies show that reading with children early and often leads to academic success once in school. Since formal education typically does not start until ages 5-6, parents and caregivers are the first educators of their young children. By listening to stories, children learn vocabulary and language skills while expanding their imaginations. Plus, reading together offers a wonderful opportunity for bonding and building memories with your child.

Where do I start?
